SCISSORINA MAKES FIRST ETSY SALE, PROCEEDS TO BE SPENT ON EVEN MORE FABRIC
Wahoo! I have had zero time to promote, zero time to make new items - I mean, I haven't even told most of my friends that I'm up and running yet! But today I made my very first sale on Etsy despite all that. It makes a gal quite motivated to stock up the shop! Yay!
DAVE THE CAT KILLS MOUSE - MYSTERY ODOR DRIVES OWNER MAD
It's true. After 2 years of calling my cats useless, one of them decided to prove me wrong. I spent Friday night at my darling SteveKam's place. When I got home Saturday morning, I noticed that my bedroom smelled....funny. I immediately scolded Kyra for her non-stop fart factory of a rear end and got on with my day. When the smell didn't dissipate, I started to suspect there may be poo or puke involved. I tore apart my room - sheets torn off the bed, dog bed thrown downstairs, blankets and laundry bags removed. I vaccumed the carpet. I Fabreezed everything. I vaccumed again. The smell. was still. there. Then I went to unplug the vaccum. I glanced down and saw a little dark spot on the carpet. Hmm, what is that?", I thought. "Oh - what's that under the modem?" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. Dead mouse. Smelly dead mouse. Really big smelly dead mouse. Really big smelly dead mouse that looks like Jasper, the hamster I had when I was a kid. Well, mystery solved. :) After a calming phone call with SteveKam, I brought Jasper II outside and gently placed him under a tree in the yard. I haven't looked at Dave the cat in the same way since. He's tasted blood. He's all growed up. *sniff*
26 DIAPERS TAKE A LONG TIME TO MAKE
Wait. That's not news. We already know that. Well, they are coming along very nicely. Working on the inside layer now... hopefully they'll be done by next weekend!
SARAH BUYS MANY STICKERS, GIVING EXTRAS AWAY FOR FUN
It's true! I wanted a new bumper sticker for the Mazda, and have 3 leftover! They are the stickers seen here - I have 1 of the "My other car is a sewing machine" and 2 of the "Don't blame me, I voted for Etsy" stickers. First 3 to comment that they want one will get their wish! I'll email the winners for their mailing addys. :)
Okay - back to the Craft Prison Diaper Sweatshop. :) I am even more motivated now! Yee-ha!

I live in a Diaper Factory.
Well, at least it's not a dirty diaper factory.
I'm working on a custom order for my girl Jennie, who is due sooooooon. I'm in the process of stitching up 26 fabulous cloth diapers for the little girl who will soon grace us with her presence.
Here are my first attempts. :) I wanted to make sure I understood the wacky pattern correctly. They came out fab, no?
So, now I'm in the assembly line phase. Working one step at a time... times 23 diapers... Yeah. I'll see y'all in another couple weeks. :)

Spiffing Up The Joint
I've decided to redecorate a bit here at la casa. Here is my most recent creation:
I whipped these bad boys up with some fab Amy Butler fabric I picked up at The Fabric Tree in Danbury. No pattern, friends! (Well, truth be known, if I couldn't put together a couple of zippered pillow covers without a pattern by now I'd likely call it quits. Still... it sounds impressive.)
I have a pair of zippy little curtains finished up as well - alas, I picked up the wrong size curtain rod. Poop.
Heather's coming into town tomorrow! Hooray for sisterly weekends. They are just the bee's knees.

Blue Sky Hat
So, I finished this just in time for my trip to Maine back in July, but due to my now infamous lack of motivation to photograph and blog, you haven't heard about it till now.
I had my eye on this pattern for a while, but it wasn't until I stopped into my new local quilt shop (!!) that I found some fabric worthy of the effort.
Pattern: Blue Sky Hat by Amy Butler
Fabric: 100% cotton green/white print (Newtown Quilts!) and cotton duckcloth (Joann Fabric)
Pattern Notes: I really loooooove Amy Butler's detailed approach to pattern writing. When this was completed, I really felt that I created something that looked professionally made! And it was entirely thanks to Amy's attention to a few key details and a little care on the seamstress' part. Since I was planning on using my hat to protect me from the sun while paddling, I planned ahead and included two straps to tie in the front.... in case of wind! After all this work, the last thing I wanted was to see this bonnet floating downstream! Once finished, I sprayed the whole thing with 3 coats of Scotch-Guard to make it water-resistant and easier to clean. The result? My legs may have been a bright shade of fiery red, but my face was sunburn-free thanks to my smart little sun hat. :)
Super mega thanks to my personal photographer, SteveKam. He snapped these while we were out at Holcombe Wildlife Preserve on a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Necessity is Yo Mama, Part I
Sometimes you just get in a groove. You see things around you that either don't work the way they should, could work better or just plain need to be fixed - and you decide to take action.
I'm in a groove. Here is part 1 of a 3 part series in which things around la casa de scissorina have been fixed an/or improved.
Enter Dave's cardboard box. This thing has been an eyesore in my kitchen for months. But, he loves it so damn much I just haven't had the heart to get rid of it... You see, it's no normal box. It has these little holes in the sides. Holes the size of Dave's legs. He likes to crouch down, lying in wait.... and when Tito strolls past... BAM! Out come Dave's paws - through the holes - to thrash at Tito! I find it so entertaining that it has been worth the eyesore. Until now.
The other day, I whipped out some Amy Butler fat quarters I had laying around and shoved some cotton batting in between two of them.... and started renovating.
Sigh. I feel better. I think I might slap a few coats of pet-safe paint on the walls and reinforce the floor next... Like I said. It's entertaining....

Stitching Sublimely, or, A Lovely Lady Finally Receives Her Baby Gift
So, I finally got off my rear and sent My Favorite Boozehag the gift I made for her new arrival. (Well. Newish arrival. I'm waaaaay late, people.)
See, the problem here was not necessarily the scale of the gift. Nor the difficulty (though it was a nice little challenge). No, my problem turned out to be sticking to a project.
I tried sewing a dress for little Nia. It sucked balls. It was wonky and pissing me off. I tried knitting a sweater. None of the yarn or patterns I tried really seemed to scream "Christine!!!". (Not to mention... the Lady can knit like a mofo, so what am I doing sending her something that is knit? No way.) Then I tried making a quilt - and I couldn't find the fabrics I wanted. Grrrrowl. I was starting to get very annoyed. (And embarrassed! Baby gifts are supposed to be done around the time the, um, baby arrives!)
Then it struck me! Embroidery! I hadn't tried and failed at that yet! So I picked up some onsesies (3-9 month size thankyouverymuch. Like I said... I was a running late.) and whipped out my big ol box of embroidery thread snagged at the latest craft swap. I ordered a few Sublime Stitching patterns and decided to give it a go.
And it went! I am in love with my new found hobby (like I need another one) and have to say I am pretty proud of how these turned out!
I ran with the Roller Derby theme as Madame BH is now a rocking derby girl!
Patterns used: Roller Derby
MH has a shirt with this saying on it... I covet that shirt. So I decided to re-create in onesie form, guessing that Christine would also find it hilllllarious.
Patterns used: Unicorn Believer and Dainty Days (chopped up to make the days into the words I wanted!)
I am happy to report that she lervs them. I am also happy to report that this is one more baby gift off my list. Yahoo!
Please Note: Sassy's gift is also done but I need to make time to go down to Brooklyn and hand it over.... Or maybe it will find itself in the mail also... so the kid can enjoy it before her 16th birthday.... ;)
PS - Just updated Fiberfly with 2 new rovings... one of which is some corriedale in the Hubba Hubba colourway I used for Clappletis... Yee!

Beginner's Bee
I'm feeling very productive for this first week after Ecksmas! Posts, photos, almost finished project (more on that one tomorrow) and now an online Quilting Bee!
So, Mary and I - and a few other scissorinas - have been talking about making quilts this winter... We decided we should make them at the same time since we're all novices and I offered to start up a beginner's quilt-along to get some more craftistas/craftistos* in on the action!

Click on the buzzy bee to get to the new quilt-along blog!
Feel like joining in? Shoot an email to sarahATscissorinaDOTcom (or leave me a comment here) and I'll add you! I'll have you know that we have recruited Edie, the Scissor Squad's resident quilt master, to help us with our questions! And she'll be quilting right along with us (Her quilts are out of this world, people! I can't wait to see what she does this time!).
I went out and bought a copy of The Modern Quilt Workshop and have been perusing the quilts rated "simple" for a possible project - though those "difficult" quilts are mighty tempting! I like how they include measurements and yardage requirements for each pattern in different sizes - so you can make a wall quilt, napping, twin, or full/queen out of any of their neato modern patterns.
And the best part? A trip to the fabric store of course. Hmm... Maybe a trek up to the super sized Joann's Etc on the Berlin Turnpike is in order.... Mary's down in Flor-duh, so I think I'll be calling on some of the snippy sisterhood for a road trip!
*don't want to discriminate - there could be some guys out there who want to quilt-along!

In The Bag
Thought I'd reveal another one of my gifts I made since the recipient finally got it!

I made this bag for Caitlin using Vogue Pattern 8098, some 50's "How to Get a Husband" fabric I had ordered from Repro Depot a while back, and some red cotton fabric I had lying around. I'm thrilled to report that Caitlin think's it's the cat's meow and has declared she will never use another purse again! Woo!
Some shots of the pockets, lining, and a better shot of that badass fabric:
And remember... If you want to get a husband, don't scold him when he takes a drink! Avoid that boyish look and don't play the field. Show him that you love housework and adore children. Don't be too sexy! And don't forget - if he's the generous type, grab him!
Right.

1. Put the hurt on that bulging fabric stash I have.
I felt I needed a break from knitting, so I whipped up this big sack style tote to haul my many WIP's around in!
Here's a better look at the cutest handles ever! Purchased at Joann....
And a peek at the lining and two pockets inside!
What's that you say? What is the purple blob at the bottom of my sack?
Why, it's my progress on the Cabled Shrug from Interweave Knits!
OH! I'm late to meet up with the Squad - check ya latah.
